New House Bill 2142 would Allow Northwestern Arizona to Use Colorado River Water for Municipal and Consumer Needs (PhoenixBusinessJournal)
(Feb. 6, 2009, Phoenix Business Journal)
A bill in the Arizona Legislature would allow Colorado River water to be used for municipal and consumer needs in northwestern Arizona.
Current water laws state Colorado River water pumped into Mohave County may be used only for industrial applications such as mines, mills, utility plants and golf courses. The requirement stems from 1922 and 1928 federal water compacts that divvy up water among Arizona, California and other Colorado River basin states.
House Bill 2142 would expand those rules to allow Colorado River water to be used for municipal and consumer needs in the Kingman area. The region could see population and real estate growth based on its proximity to Las Vegas and growth of its retirement-age population.
