David Zetland is Right: Water Rates have to Rise, and Globally Too (LeakBird)
I think that David Zetland is onto the zeitgeist, only it hasn’t happened yet. What do I mean, or what is Mr. Zetland saying essentially?
Price water according to its scarcity, and water shortages will become a thing of the past.
This is the axe we hear Mr. Zetland grinding again and again, and it appears that people are finally starting to pay attention, even China, as well as Harvard professors who seem to have forgotten the messenger but not the message. I wish they’d give Mr. Zetland his due, although I’d be willing to bet it’s only a matter of time.
In a recent Bloomberg interview, Mr. Zetland referred to the “academic suicide” that is also known as blogging.
The German word “zeitgeist” can “only be observed for past events“, if we take the original meaning. However, I’m talking about prescience and vision. I’m talking about necessity.
Water rationing doesn’t work. It only exacerbates the problem of water shortages, giving life to the “The Water Shortage Myth“.
Water is an undervalued commodity, a scarce precious resource. It’s too cheap, way to cheap, as we spend an average of $1.00 to $2.00 per 748 gallons or 1 HCF (hundred cubic feet) in small municipalities across the country, and an average of $2.00 to $3.00 (with tiered water rates often accompanying) per HCF in large municipalities.
Cheap water will soon be a thing of the past. Listen to Mr. Zetland. It appears he’s onto something, the zeitgeist. He’s simply telling us where we’re heading, not where we want to go, but where we need to go. And it so happens that where we need to go, is also where we will most want to go once we get there.
