Note to Self: Repair Running Toilet Already, because It Constantly Runs, Well, Almost (LeakBird)
Because no matter what I seem to do, my toilet always seems to find a way to run for a few minutes, I often think about all of the ways in which a toilet can run or leak. When you get down to it, there are two main ways the water can outflow.
- Down the overflow pipe three quarters of an inch above which water should not go
- Down the hole upon which the flush valve rests
I do live in a Victorian apartment in San Francisco, with old tenuous plumbing (that includes fixtures). However, the inner workings of my toilet have been upgraded fairly consistently over the three or four years that I’ve lived here.
I talk about the story of the Blind Men and the Elephant in Chapter 2 of The Running Toilet book, which shows how a lot of people think that once and for all you can solve the running toilet problem, by merely addressing one tiny aspect of the issue and thinking that it covers the whole gamut of the problem. This simply isn’t true.
Often time jiggling the handle is what needs to happen, even if you’re an expert supra plumbing afficianado who has the golden flapper. ;-)
No, but seriously, my toilet must run on average for at least ten minutes a day. If you add up all of that water (let’s be conservative and say that’s gallon of water per minute), then I’m wasting 300 gallons of water per month alone due to a toilet that constantly runs, almost.
That’s 3600 gallons of water per year!
Anyway, you get the point.
Because toilets run, we need to always be on the lookout, on our guard.
