Yesterday the World Economic Forum (WEF) released its Water Initiative, 2009 Report from Davos, Switzerland. You can download the PDF from the Council on Foreign Relations’ (CFR) website.

The report is nothing short of shocking:

  • Within 20 years entire grain crops equivalent to India and US lost
  • Within 20 years water more mainstream, bigger-better investment/ biz than oil
  • Water requirements expected to grow by 165% in US in next few years
  • 70 major world rivers on verge of being completely drained

Just this morning, USA Today is running a story on how California is facing the “worst drought in modern history“. Of course, California is the bread basket of the US. It’s easy to see how food, water, financial and national security are intimately entwined:

California’s largest reservoirs — Shasta and Oroville — are less than half as full as they should be for this time of year.

As Gerald Celente pointed out in his 2008 Trends Research report, “Conservation Engineers” would come to the fore over the coming years as one of the most explosive career paths and/or effective business directions.

Perhaps it’s true that, as Goldmans Sachs decried last year when mentioning the $425bn water industry, all technologies that conserve water will benefit business and bureau.

We certainly think so, expecially following the above-mentioned WEF Report.
