Oil and Water Mix: Four Reasons Why Water will Be Big(ger) (LeakBird)
There’s a lot of talk comparing the oil boom to the coming water boom. Discussing whether water will be bigger and more important than oil is kind of a foolish tack, IMHO. The point is that we can hardly do anything without water. I think that rather than comparing the two industries, it’s more useful to acknowledge that oil and water do mix.
There are actually four reasons water will be big(ger):
- Agriculture: As we’ve been seeing in California, where millions of acres of almonds and certain fruits and vegetables will be fallowed this year, without water a whole lot can’t be done. And as the population booms across the globe, the demand for food soars. Of course, oil is a huge part of ag as well, as it fuels the machinery and makes up a large part of the pesticides which keep the crops from rotting. Of course, being a fan of organic food and of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, as well as an admirer of Farmer John from The Real Dirt on Farmer John, I know that pesticides can wreak havoc.
- Sanitation: People need to be clean. We know that 80% of all disease is borne by polluted water. Also, we know that where people are unable to bathe in clean water, disease is more prevalent.
- Thirst: A man can’t go more than a few days without drinking water.
- Industry: Industry needs water to run most processes and it can’t be salt water in many cases, due to its abrasive texture. And then of course, in the heartland salt water is impossible to pipe in anyway, so it’s a moot point.
So I know that almost all of these are no brainers. Water is the stuff of life. However, four completely different industries within the water industry can grow up around these above-mentioned areas.
Oil and water do mix. They’re brothers, in fact, and we can’t do without them.
