The effects of a destructive water main break in downtown Baltimore are still being felt Wednesday morning.

Mary Bubala reports many businesses were forced to close because of the rushing water Tuesday. However, Wednesday all government buildings will be open along with most local restaurants and attractions.

But many roads will remain closed. Lombard Street, the main westbound route through downtown, remains closed near Gay Street on Wednesday. That closure is expected to snarl traffic during the morning rush hour.

Public Works spokesman Kurt Kocher says BGE turned over command of the water main hole to DPW at 3 a.m. After doing the repairs it needed to do to make the hole safe. Some businesses in the immediate vicinity may see discolored water — it is safe to wash with, but not safe to drink. The water should clear as the work continues.
