When I was doing the grocery shopping one day, back in Madison, WI, I made an amazing discovery. Right across from the beer, and round the corner from the dried fruit and wine, I saw the iconic image of New Zealand’s Mitre Peak – a mountain that pops out of Milford Sound, a fjord in the south west of the country that receives 6813 mm of rainfall a year.

The discovery was that this image was affixed to bottles of water. Artesian water, no less. Imported from New Zealand, but I highly doubt from Milford Sound. Why on Earth did Trader Joes have to import water all the way from New Zealand, and to Wisconsin of all places?! The answer is obvious, really: to make money. But I thought it a little ironic, given that quite a few agricultural regions round NZ experience seasonal droughts.

What did it taste like, you ask? Me, buy bottled water, even to be patriotic? Nope. Well, perhaps for the sake of science, but not this time. Instead, let us check in with the soothsayers and readers of tea leaves:

“I find the best tasting water are Trader Joe’s New Zealand artesian and Glacier vending machine water, also most suitable for tea brewing. New Zealand water is the winner in taste and being all natural, however expensive.”

Apparently, our NZ water also cures the common headache:

“I am seven months pregnant and I can tell good water just by the way it makes me feel, not just the taste. Poland Spring can’t compare to this – it tastes dead. My husband and I drink this at the first sign of a headache and it makes it go away instantly, no so with other bottled waters.”

So if you’re looking for a good drop, and don’t mind the embodied carbon and water, check it out. Otherwise, I recommend the 2007 pinot noirs from Central Otago.
