Water Conservation Becomes Crucial Issue in Texas (StarTelegram)
(Jan. 10, 2009, Star-Telegram)
As North Texas continues to grow and develop, water conservation becomes a crucial issue. In businesses, water conservation practices include low-flush toilets and automatic faucets. In homes, there are low-flush toilets and water-efficient dish and clothes washers and shower heads. Landscapes are the other big water user. A landscape can use 35 percent to 60 percent more water during the summer, so make a new year’s resolution to save landscape water. New irrigation technologies are available that make irrigation and controllers more efficient. Some new sprinkler heads will not waste water if the head is broken. Some are pressure compensating to stop over-spray if the water pressure is too strong. New smart irrigation controllers use sensors to tell when and how long to water. The new controllers also have soak and cycle settings to water heavy clay soil and slopes.
Start with an irrigation audit by an irrigation auditor or licensed irrigator who will tell whether the irrigation system is working properly and efficiently. The irrigator will check for leaks, make sure each valve and sprinkler head is working properly, and that the irrigation controller is set correctly. Lone Star Irrigation Association and Dallas Irrigators Association are the leading organizations for licensed irrigators.
