The new water rates are about to kick in in San Francisco, on July 1, 2008. The water rate across the board goes up $.40 per unit.  On the wastewater treatment side of things, T1 goes up $.28, T2 goes up $.71, and T3 goes up $.81 per unit.

What does all of this mean?  Well, let’s take the two running toilets that ran for 17 days in one of Jordan’s buildings, in April of last year, summarized in our first post, “An Uncaring Tenancy…“.  The water bill was $1510.50.  According to the rates which went into effect last July, of 2007, that same water bill would have been $1715.17.  That’s $200+ higher, $204.67 to be exact!!! At the new rates, which go into effect next Tuesday (July 1st), that same water bill would be $1905.54.  That’s almost $400 higher, $390.38 to be exact!!! In other words, the growing problem is showing up big-time when it comes to the bottom-line, which means the SFPUC is serious when they say “conserve water”.

Back in April of ‘07, the water rate was $1.97 per unit (untiered) no matter how many units (a unit is 748 gallons) used.  As of now, that number is $2.47 per unit for all units used, so it’s gone up $.50.  That price will go up to $2.87 per unit on July 1, 2008.

(You can get this information from the “At Your Service” section of the SFPUC homepage.)

In 2007, the wastewater rates, on the other hand, were at:

T1 $2.88 per unit for the 1st 3 discharge units per dwelling unit per month (confusing, I know), T2 $7.19 per unit for the next 2 discharge units per dwelling unit per month, followed by T3 $8.22 per unit for all additional discharge units per dwelling unit per month.

These rates changed on July 14, 2007 to what they are today:

T1 $3.14 per unit for the 1st 3 discharge units per dwelling unit per month, T2 $7.84 per unit for the next 2 discharge units per dwelling unit per month, followed by T3 $8.96 per unit for all additional discharge units per dwelling unit per month.

And as of July 1, 2008 (in one week), they will change to:

T1 $3.42 per unit for the 1st 3 discharge units per dwelling unit per month, T2 $8.55 per unit for the next 2 discharge units per dwelling unit per month, followed by T3 $9.77 per unit for all additional discharge units per dwelling unit per month.

The average SF household uses 7 units per billing cycle = 5236 gallons, who make up 88% of all SFPUC ratepayers.
