Water, sewer rates are set to increase by 15 percent for the second straight year.

A group of Prichard residents Monday protested a water and sewer utility rate increase scheduled to go into effect next month.

The city’s Water Works and Sewer Board has approved a 15 percent rate increase set to begin Nov. 1, system officials said.

System officials said the increase will pay for rising costs, system repairs and the expenses of complying with state and federal regulations.
