Shock: 10%+ of All Residential, In-Building Water Consumption due to Running or Leaking Toilets!!! (LeakBird)
Okay, so this number may shock you, but trust me, I didn’t make it up. I actually did a year’s worth of research, and I haven’t heard anyone say this yet — in fact, I’d like someone to disprove it.
Here’s what I extrapolated. I’ll preface by stating that 25% to 40% of all in-building, residential water consumption passes through toilets or is used by toilet fixtures:
- 14% of all in-building, residential water consumption or usage can be attributed to leaking fixtures
- 90% of all in-building, residential water consumption or usage is due to running and leaking toilet fixtures
- Hence, 12.6% of all in-building, residential water consumption or usage can be attributed to leaking and running toilet fixtures
Now if this number doesn’t astound you, I don’t know what will. Let’s just say this number is far, far greater than any that I have come across in statistics and research.
Doesn’t this basically mean that 10% of all toilets in the US at any given moment are leaking at full throttle on average? One could argue for or against this statement, as we don’t know exactly to what degree we mean when we say that a toilet is running or leaking. We do know that they average 2 to 6 gallons per minute when they are running.
What this does mean, however, is that 1/10th of every gallon of water that flows through our public waterways and makes it to our residential plumbing systems, ends up down the toilet without even having been flushed.
This stat is a fairly compelling reason for taking precaution to be water efficient when it comes to the single biggest culprit of water waste in the world — the toilet.
And of course, none of this would really matter economically (environmentally, of course, it’s catastrophic) if it wasn’t beginning to make a HUGE impact on our pocketbooks, as water rates shoot toward the moon, for water will one day soon no longer be considered an undervalued commodity but a precious, somewhat non-renewable resource that is vital to any economy.
