ORANGE COUNTY
Residents of the Wedgefield Golf & Equestrian Community, a 1,500-home planned development, are facing their first week of paying about 83 percent more for water. Rob Goderis, president of Wedgefield’s homeowners association, said: “We’re not real happy with it. That’s a big jump.” The east Orange community near Christmas gets its water services from Wedgefield Utilities, part of Utilities Inc., which runs about 80 utility companies in 16 states as well as a dozen water and wastewater companies in Florida. The Public Service Commission, which governs utilities in Florida, approved the rate hike effective Jan. 28. Residents who were paying $2.19 per 1,000 gallons of water now pay $4 per 1,000 gallons for the first 5,000 gallons of water, then $5 per 1,000 gallons. A household using 10,000 gallons a month will now pay $45, versus $21.90. An Orlando Utilities Commission customer currently pays $10.98 for that amount of water.
