Water Restrictions Approved for Santa Cruz, California: Steep Fines of Up to $500.00 (MercuryNews)
(April 28, 2009, The Mercury News)
Water restrictions will begin Friday for about 90,000 residents from the North Coast to Capitola, after Santa Cruz leaders on Tuesday unanimously approved an emergency order to save water.
As a result, customers with Santa Cruz Water Department will be restricted to watering outdoors on two assigned days each week. Restaurants will be allowed to serve water only if asked, and hotels must give guests the option of reusing their sheets and towels without washing them every day, among other requirements.
Chronic rule breakers could be fined up to $500.
“Some prudent measures are needed this year,” said Toby Goddard, the department’s water conservation manager. However, Goddard said, the rules are lenient enough that residents still should be able to maintain their gardens and landscaping.
“It may not look great, but nothing should really die,” Goddard said.
