Silicon Valley’s largest water supplier is asking its customers to cut back on water usage by 15 percent this summer. With water levels low at its main reservoir, the board of the Santa Clara Valley Water District voted Tuesday for water cutbacks.

The district provides the water used by 1.8 million homes and businesses from Los Altos to Gilroy.

Because the district distributes the water to 13 retail providers, it has no enforcement power to order water cutbacks.

Instead, the cities and agencies that rely on the district’s water must decide to pass ordinances to cut back on water or usage, or to charge higher rates for using too much water.

Santa Clara Valley Water directors say measures to reduce water consumption last year fell short.
